Sneakers

Three brands do most of the work here, and they split cleanly by material.

Ration.L R-Kind Trainer, in Mercury Black, Lunar Rock grey and Titan Khaki. Certified solvent-free PU upper, organic cotton lining and laces, recycled aluminium eyelets, recycled TPR sole, biodegradable packaging. Vegan Society certified. A plain low-top that goes with everything, and the easiest first pair to recommend.

Minuit sur Terre Virevolte, white or cream. The upper is a plant-based material made from cereal waste, the same family of material as their Zodiac boot. The cream version uses a recycled grain leather instead.

COG Topsy and Winton, in white and white-and-blue. Grape pomace uppers, the same 26% grape blend COG uses on the Laika boot, with PETA Approved Vegan and OEKO-TEX 100 certification. Made in Europe.

Worth knowing about: Elliott’s classic vegan leather sneaker in white, NAE’s Redo mid-top made from recycled PET, and Zeta Shoes’ Alpha in green, another grape leather.

Sizing on all of these runs true. The one thing that catches people out is that plant-based uppers do not stretch the way leather does, so if you are between sizes, go up.

Sandals

Bohema is the pick if you want cactus leather. The Strappy sandal in black pairs a minimalist upper with a chunky sole, and the Uptown mule is the dressier version with a geometric heel. Both use Desserto cactus leather over a recycled polyester and cotton backing, with a breathable microfibre footbed and a rubber sole, handmade in Poland.

Bikkou covers the flat and heeled end. The 7pm Sunset at the Beach mule comes in camel and classic black, and the 12:30pm and 9pm strappy heels are the going-out pair. Semi-glossy textured uppers, and the styling is more summer holiday than office.

Backpacks

LaBante London makes the two most practical ones. The Agnes is the everyday pack, 31.5 x 31.5 x 14.5 cm, with double inner compartments, adjustable fastening belts and a chain detail on the centre zip. The Acacia is the commuter version, gender-neutral, with a padded 15-inch laptop compartment and two main zip compartments. Both use a vegan leather made from vegetable by-products and PU, with a lining woven from reclaimed plastic bottles, and both ship in an organic cotton dust cover. The factories are SEDEX certified and the bags are PETA-approved.

Beyond those two, the range runs to a cork backpack, a hemp everyday pack, an upcycled option and an apple leather one. Cork and hemp are the genuinely low-plastic choices in this category, which is rare enough to be worth saying.

Care is the same for all of them: store stuffed with clean paper in the dust bag, keep them out of direct sun and humidity, and wipe with a damp cloth.

Totes and shoulder bags

Canussa Totissimo, in camel or brown. A foldable waterproof tote in microfibre, 29 x 30 x 17 cm, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, that packs down flat when you are not using it. The most useful bag on this list if you travel.

Watson & Wolfe Maddox, in black and cobalt, or rust and emerald. A 15-inch laptop tote in a corn-based vegan leather made from non-food-grade corn, which carries a lower carbon footprint than conventional vegan leather and contains no chromium or PPD. Exterior slip pocket, interior zip pocket, three popper closure.

Watson & Wolfe Wilton, the crossbody version of the same material, 24.2 x 17.5 x 7.5 cm with an adjustable 53.5 to 58.5 cm strap and a recycled PET lining. PETA-approved.

LaBante London Sophie, in forest green or black, plus the Aricia laptop bag and the Demi winged tote. Their bucket bag, apple leather shoulder bag and cactus leather options round the range out.

Corn-based leather is the one to know about here. It is the newest of the plant-based materials and the only one on this page making a specific carbon claim against conventional vegan leather, which at least gives you something to check.

Jackets and the rest

Vegan leather jackets are a smaller field and the prices swing hard. Matt & Nat, Altiir, James & Co. and Will’s Vegan Store cover the classic biker and racer shapes. Deadwood’s River jacket is cactus leather. Culthread’s Lonsdale is recycled. Boden is the high-street option.

For boots outside the ten above, Dr. Martens makes a vegan 1460 in Felix, which is the one to get if you want something that will take a beating and can be resoled. Where to buy

Immaculate Vegan is the best single place to start, since everything on it is vetted and it carries most of the brands above. Votch is watches and accessories. Jacinto & Lirio works in piña, a pineapple leaf leather, and is worth knowing about if you want something outside the European brands.

On the high street, Stella McCartney has been doing this longest and prices accordingly. ASOS, Urban Outfitters, Free People and Nasty Gal all carry vegan leather, though the material quality is a lottery and the pieces are not built to last the way the specialist brands are.

What is vegan leather made from?

Most are made from polyurethane (PU) or microfibre, both synthetics. Better ones use recycled PU or recycled polyester, which cuts the amount of new plastic involved. Do vegan shoes fit the same as leather ones?
