Strawberry Matcha Latte Recipe (Boba Guys Copycat)
A strawberry matcha latte is three layers in one glass: mashed sweetened strawberries at the bottom, plant milk in the middle, whisked matcha poured over the top. It takes about five minutes and no special equipment beyond a whisk. This is our copycat of the version sold by the boba chain Boba Guys. Add ice and boba if you like.
Strawberries against the grassy edge of matcha is a good pairing, and it is a change from a plain matcha latte. It is dairy-free by default, it looks striking with the layers sitting on top of each other, and it works on a hot day.
I like strawberry milk, but I think it is better with matcha in it.

Green tea leaves ground into a fine powder. Instead of steeping leaves and throwing them out, you whisk the powder into water and drink the leaf itself.
Because you are drinking the whole leaf rather than an infusion of it, more of the plant compounds end up in your cup, including the catechins that green tea is known for. That is a statement about what is in the glass, not a promise about what it will do for you.
How much caffeine is in matcha?
More than a cup of steeped green tea, less than a cup of coffee. Around 240 ml (8 fl oz) of matcha made with 1 teaspoon of powder works out at roughly 60 to 70 mg of caffeine, while the same amount of drip coffee sits closer to 80 to 100 mg. The exact figure moves with the grade of powder and how much you use.
L-Theanine, an amino acid found in matcha, is often credited with making the lift feel steadier than coffee does. The research on that is mixed, so treat it as one of the reasons people like matcha rather than a settled fact.
Matcha in Japanese Tradition
Matcha is served ceremonially in the Japanese practice known as Sado, the Way of Tea, which is shaped by Zen Buddhism. The ceremony is unhurried and deliberate, and that pace is a large part of the appeal.
Making matcha every day has become a bit of a ritual for me. I would not want to start a morning without it now.
Strawberry Matcha Latte
If you like strawberries and matcha green tea, this one is for you. It is full of juicy strawberries and the delicately grassy taste of matcha, and it takes five minutes.
Three separate layers make up the strawberry matcha latte, which is why it looks the way it does:
- Bottom layer: Fresh or frozen strawberries blended with sweetness make up the bottom layer.
- Middle layer: Oat milk or plant-based milk of any sort. You can also learn how to make your homemade oat milk here.
- Top layer: Matcha powder blended with a bit of hot water for the top layer.
Matcha and strawberries turn up together across a lot of Asian sweets, and the pairing has made its way onto the menu at Starbucks and boba shops worldwide.
Ingredients for Strawberry Matcha Latte
- Strawberries: For the base layer of strawberry puree, you can use fresh or frozen strawberries. Use fresh strawberries for the garnish and for chopping into small pieces.
- Matcha powder: For the finest flavour, use the best matcha powder you can find. Look for airtight packaging and a bright green colour. Dull, yellowish powder is old and will taste flat and bitter.
- Oat Milk: For this Strawberry Matcha Latte recipe, I use oat milk because of its sweeter taste compared to almond milk, which has a nutty flavour. But you can use any other plant-based milk you prefer
How do you make a strawberry matcha latte?
Here is the short version. The full quantities are at the end of this article.
Step 1: To begin, add half of the hot water to the matcha powder. Using a bamboo whisk or a small whisk, combine until completely lump-free. After that, combine the remaining hot water.
Step 2: Second, use a masher, blender, or the back of a fork to purée your strawberries. Add to a glass of ice-filled servings. Then, add oat milk or your preferred milk. The use of boba is optional; add it before the strawberry puree.
Step 3: Thirdly, delicately add the matcha to form a layer on top of the milk. Stirring might cause the matcha to melt into your milk, so avoid doing that. Serve after garnishing with fresh strawberries.

Tips For Making The Best Strawberry Matcha Latte
- Use warm water rather than boiling water. Aim for around 80°C (175°F), which is just off the boil. Water at a full rolling boil scorches the powder and makes the matcha bitter.
- Sift the matcha powder. Pushing it through a small strainer before you add water stops it clumping, which gives you a smoother texture and a cleaner flavour.
- Make your matcha and use it straight away. Whisked matcha separates if it sits, and the powder settles into a sludge at the bottom of the cup.
- Frozen strawberries are slightly easier than fresh here. Thaw them and they mash with almost no effort. Fresh strawberries need cooking down first, or a good going over with a blender, before they will mash properly.
- Layer by weight. Mashed strawberries first, then ice, then milk poured slowly, then matcha last. Pouring the milk and matcha over the back of a spoon keeps the layers separate.
Strawberry Matcha Latte Recipe
Ok, now that we’ve been through everything, it is time to make the recipe. This makes two 8 oz (240 ml) drinks or one 16 oz (475 ml) drink.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Ingredients
- ¾ cups (180 ml) of oat milk - or any other plant-based milk
- ¾ cup (about 110 g) of strawberries - frozen or fresh
- 3 TBSP (about 50 g) of sugar - or to your liking
- 3 TBSP (60 ml) of hot water
- 1 ½ tsp of matcha powder
- ice for serving - (optional)
- boba (tapioca pearls) - (optional)
Instructions
- Utilizing a blender, masher, or the back of a fork, purée your strawberries together with the sugar. Continue doing this until all the sugar has dissolved.
- Matcha: Stir the matcha powder thoroughly using a tiny whisk to remove any lumps after adding half the hot water. Mix with the remaining hot water.
- Put a layer of strawberry puree in the bottom of a 16-ounce (475 ml) glass to assemble. Add ice and, if using, boba. Over the strawberry puree, add the oat milk to make a second layer. To produce the final top layer, carefully pour the matcha layer on top.
- Use fresh strawberries as a garnish, then serve.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make it hot?
Yes, and it is a different drink but a good one. Warm the milk instead of pouring it cold, cook the strawberries down with the sugar into a thick syrup so it does not seize in hot milk, then float the matcha on top. You lose some of the sharpness of the layers, since heat makes everything mix faster, so drink it soon after you build it.
Why did my layers mix together?
Usually because the pour was too fast, or because the strawberry purée was too thin to hold the milk up. Pour over the back of a spoon held just above the surface, use plenty of ice to slow the liquid down, and make sure the purée is thick rather than runny. Frozen strawberries mashed without extra water give you the best base.
Do you need ceremonial grade matcha?
Not necessarily. Ceremonial grade is milder and sweeter and is meant for drinking on its own with water. In a latte with strawberries and sugar, a good culinary grade holds up better against the milk and costs less. What matters more is that the powder is fresh and bright green rather than what the label calls it.
How long does it keep?
Drink it the day you make it. Whisked matcha starts to taste flat and bitter within an hour or two, and the layers collapse regardless. The strawberry purée is the part you can make ahead, and it will keep for three days in a sealed container in the fridge, so the drink is only a whisk away.
