Vegan Fish Tacos Easy Recipe
Vegan fish tacos get their seafood flavour from wakame seaweed, which is blended into a soy and vinegar brine and used to marinate strips of tofu before baking. Sesame seeds add crunch, while vegan mayonnaise mixed with more wakame brings back the classic fishy taste. The whole dish takes about 50 minutes from start to finish.
Why does wakame seaweed taste like fish?
Wakame carries a natural briny, oceanic note that comes from the same compounds found in seaweeds fish typically feed on. Blended with soy sauce and vinegar, it gives the tofu a savoury, sea-like flavour without any actual seafood.

- ½ Firm Tofu Block
- 5 oz Wakame Seaweed
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 tbsp Water
- 1 tsp Vinegar
- 2 Tacos
- 2 Lettuce Leaves
- 2 tbsp Vegan Mayonnaise
- 1 Large Tomato
- 2 tsp Sesame Seeds
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil
How do you make vegan fish tacos?
Begin by blending together half of the wakame seaweed all of the soy sauce, the water and the vinegar.
This will be the base of the brine we will use to give flavour to our tofu.
The next step is to place the tofu inside a small container and top it with the blended seaweed mixture we made.
Cover the bowl and place it in the fridge for 25 minutes.
After 25 minutes, discard the brine, take the tofu and cut it in half, then cut it again into thin strips.
Spread the sesame seeds on it and place it on a baking paper sheet.
Cook the sliced tofu in the oven at 340°F for about 6 minutes.
Now place a skillet over high heat and once it is very hot, cook the taco in it.
Slice the tomato and season it with the olive oil and a small pinch of salt.
Mix the remaining wakame seaweed with the vegan mayonnaise and spread it all over the taco.
Now proceed to add the tofu strips, the lettuce and the tomato.
The wakame in both the tofu marinade and the mayonnaise reinforces the sea flavour running through the whole taco.
Can you customise these vegan fish tacos?
Yes. Other fillings can be added too, so feel free to swap in whatever vegetables or toppings you have on hand.
